Cesar Millan at Western Veterinary Conference – Good or Bad?

Why am I writing this? It’s not about the choice of Cesar Millan, but about our response as veterinarians. When a company brings a representative that is opposite of proven science and veterinary medicine, it requires a response. Why a company chooses a spokesperson and how much attention they give to the background, integrity and relevancy of the spokesman to the product is just as important as scientific research and safety, in my opinion.

Dog Class: Week 1 of our Family Fido: Training for People and Their Pooches Class

It’s week 1 of our quarterly 7-week dog class and we have some fun and exciting updates in store. First, this quarter two of our student employees, Lynna and Lauren, get to teach one exercise each week. That allows me and co-instructor, Melissa Morris, CPDT-KA, to assist with the demo so that there are more “demonstrators” for the participants to watch. It also allows us to test out our curriculum for training new instructors to teach our specific training program. As usual, the set of classes started off with our introductory workshop-game show. In this workshop, we find out about

Low Stress Handling Lab in Chicago at Narnia Pet Behavior and Training

Narnia Laura Monaco Torello’s ridgeback puppy is having a great time during the handling lab. This weekend featured another successful workshop and low stress handling lab in Chicago at Narnia Pet, a fantastic positive-reinforcement based dog-training facility. While I have held most of these labs for veterinarians and their staff, most of the attendees at this lab were dog trainers, groomers, doggie daycare providers, as well as some veterinary hospital staff. With 9 little dogs and 8 large dogs participating, each team of three to four humans got plenty of practice while keeping the dogs

Technicians and Vets Learn Low Stress Animal Handling Techniques at the 2009 AVMA Conference

“I wish someone had shown me this towel wrap technique before cats had scratched my arms for 13 years,” says technician Brandy Oates, a veteran at handling pets as she practices what I call the Burrito Wrap on a stuffed cat. She’s attending the Low Stress Dog and Cat Handling Lab at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) conference in Seattle, Washington. While I have already taught this lab at a number of universities, including Colorado State University, UC Davis, and University of Wisconsin, this is the first time I’ve taught this particular lab at a national veterinary conference.
